Who's That Pokémon - Test Your Pokémon Knowledge
"Who's That Pokémon?" is a popular question-and-answer segment that has become an integral part of the Pokémon franchise. It has appeared in numerous episodes of the Pokémon anime series and has been featured on various official Pokémon platforms, including The Pokémon Company International's social media accounts and Niantic's Pokémon GO Twitter. This engaging segment also made an appearance in the Pokémon X and Y games as a puzzle in the Lumiose Gym.
In "Who's That Pokémon?" (known as だれだ?, "Who is it?" in Japanese), viewers are presented with a silhouette of a Pokémon before a commercial break. The challenge is to guess the Pokémon based on this silhouette, adding an exciting element of anticipation to the show. When the program returns from the break, the silhouette is revealed, and the attached question mark unveils the Pokémon's name, followed by the Pokémon's sound byte.
In the original Japanese version, viewers saw the silhouette of the Pokémon, but in the Journeys series, the format was altered. Instead of a silhouette, a magnified part of the Pokémon's body is shown, adding a new twist to the guessing game. Additionally, in the English version of Journeys, Ash, Goh, Chloe, and Goh's Rotom's Phone ask "Who's That Pokémon?" but do not provide the answer. Pikachu, during the identification process, says "Pika?" for each Pokémon, the Pokémon itself says its name, and Pikachu responds with "Pika, Pika!".
A variant of "Who's That Pokémon?" called "Pokémon Trainer's Choice" was introduced in the seventh and eighth seasons of Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire. However, for Diamond and Pearl episodes and Battle Frontier episodes, the English dub featured commercial break bumpers instead of a question-and-answer segment. The original version of these episodes included generic character eyecatches during the middle of the show.
